Bullet Gender Variant People in the Bay Area Jewish Community
Movement: Non/Trans-Denominational | Author: Kol Tzedek | Organization: Kol Tzedek | Date: March 25, 2009 | Resource Type: Reports

Introduction by Noach Dzmura: About a year ago I attended a presentation about gender variance in the San Francisco Bay Area Jewish community. It was amazing to see cis-gender, non-queer folk listening attentively to the stories of gender queer lives. I felt like I was standing on sacred ground. I hated to see the program end! I begged Rachel Biale of the Progressive Jewish Alliance to make sure that the transgender conversation continued. She invited me to her office to brainstorm.

How could the conversation best continue? I didn’t expect to start a revolution – I had in mind a series of discussion groups at different venues, something with a panel, maybe. I wanted the word “transgender” to grow sweet on people’s lips. A year later, together with the collective Rachel asked me to join, called Kol Tzedek, we have fomented a quiet revolution. Kol Tzedek is an alliance of Jewish organizations working together in unprecedented ways to include transgender people in all aspects of Bay Area Jewish life. A couple of months ago we met with Daniel Sokatch, the Executive Director of the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties. The meeting was a success, and now a Transgender sub-committee of the JCF’s LGBT Alliance is being established to consider next steps.
